6 Ways to Find Your Vehicle's Weight

Easiest

Driver's Side Door Jamb Sticker

Open your driver's door and look for a white or silver sticker on the door frame or B-pillar. It lists the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). Subtract about 800–1,200 lbs for cargo capacity to estimate curb weight.

Works even if the car doesn't run.

Easy

Owner's Manual / Spec Sheet

Check the specifications section at the back of your owner's manual. It lists curb weight by trim level. Don't have the manual? Search your year, make, and model followed by "owner's manual PDF."

Gives factory curb weight, doesn't account for aftermarket additions.

Easy

Manufacturer's Website

Go to the manufacturer's website and find your model's spec page. Most list curb weight by trim and drivetrain. For older vehicles, try searching automotive databases like Edmunds.

Most accurate for stock vehicles. Our tool above uses this same data.

Moderate

VIN Decode

Your 17-digit VIN encodes your exact model, trim, engine, and drivetrain. Run it through the free NHTSA VIN decoder at vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov to identify your exact configuration.

Find your VIN on the driver's side dashboard (visible through windshield) or door jamb.

Most Accurate

Weigh It at a Truck Scale

For the most accurate weight including modifications or missing parts, drive to a public truck scale (CAT scale). They're at most truck stops and cost $10–15.

Only works if the car runs. But it's the gold standard for actual current weight.

Varies by State

Registration / Title

Some states list vehicle weight on the registration card or title. California, New York, and Texas typically include it. Check your current registration or contact your DMV.

When listed, this is usually the unladen (empty) weight — close to curb weight.

Curb Weight vs. GVWR vs. Gross Weight

Curb Weight What we use
The weight of the vehicle as it sits at the curb — with all standard equipment, a full tank of fuel, and all necessary fluids, but no passengers or cargo. This is the standard measurement used by manufacturers and databases.
GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) On your door sticker
The maximum total weight the vehicle is designed to carry — including the vehicle itself, passengers, cargo, and tongue weight from towing. It's always higher than curb weight.
Gross Weight / Actual Weight Best for modified vehicles
What the vehicle weighs right now, at this moment, with whatever's in it. Measured at a truck scale. This matters most if major components have been added or removed.
Dry Weight Rarely relevant
The vehicle's weight without any fluids — no fuel, oil, coolant, or brake fluid. Rarely used outside of manufacturer spec sheets. Lower than curb weight by 50–150 lbs.

Vehicle Weight Questions

Where does this vehicle weight data come from?

Curb weights come from the Teoalida Year-Make-Model-Trim Basic Specs database: 68,561 US-market trims from 1990 to 2027, using manufacturer-published figures.

What is curb weight?

Curb weight is what the vehicle weighs with standard equipment, a full tank of fuel and all fluids, but no passengers or cargo. It is the figure manufacturers publish and the one scrap yards use as a starting point.

Is the weight on my door sticker the curb weight?

No. The door-jamb sticker shows the GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating), the most the vehicle can weigh fully loaded. Curb weight is usually 800 to 1,500 lb lower.

How much does an average car weigh?

Across the models in our database, a typical compact car weighs about 3,151 lb, a mid-size car about 3,588 lb, and a full-size pickup about 5,616 lb.

Why does weight matter when selling a junk car?

Scrap yards pay by the ton, so weight sets the floor price of a junk car. At the February 2026 national average of $185 a ton, every 1,000 lb is worth about $95 in scrap. Use the scrap value calculator to price your exact car.
