San Antonio's inoperable vehicle rules
Texas lets cities define junked vehicles more broadly than state law does, and San Antonio's code enforcement treats an inoperable car left in ordinary public view as a junked vehicle. A wrecked, dismantled or partially dismantled car is presumed inoperable.
If Code Enforcement investigates your car, the City asks you to meet the investigator within ten days to show it runs. Keeping it out of sight means a garage, behind a privacy fence or at a licensed repair shop; a tarp does not count. State law requires at least 10 days' notice before a city removes a junked vehicle, and maintaining one as a nuisance carries a fine of up to $200. Code complaints go through 311 (210-207-6000). If the car isn't going to run again, selling it before the deadline settles the case.

Where a dead car can sit while you sell it
San Antonio doesn't allow parking on an unimproved front or side yard. Cars and trailers have to sit on an improved surface: concrete, asphalt, brick, or gravel with a barrier. Homeowners can pave no more than half of the front yard for parking, so a car pushed onto the grass is a violation of its own (City Code §19-134 and Unified Development Code §35-383).
When you describe the car, say where it is parked: a driveway, a backyard behind a fence or a shop lot. That lets the buyer send the right tow truck.

Give the buyer the title signed with the date of sale and the odometer reading.
Keep or deface your plates
Texas plates can come off with you. Move them to another vehicle of the same type, keep them, or deface the front of them with permanent ink so they can't be misused. The registration sticker does not transfer.
File a Vehicle Transfer Notification within 30 days
File it online with TxDMV. If you do it within 30 days of the sale you can't be held responsible for the buyer's tickets or tolls.

Texas generally requires one. Since January 1, 2026, a licensed used auto parts recycler can scrap a vehicle without a title only if it is at least 13 years old and hasn't been registered for 7 years.
