Junked vehicle rules in Dallas and Fort Worth
Texas law treats a self-propelled vehicle with an expired or missing license plate as junked when it is wrecked, dismantled or discarded, or has been inoperable for more than 30 consecutive days on private property. Cities can widen that definition. Fort Worth's Code Compliance checklist looks at whether the car lacks a current registration sticker and plate, is wrecked or dismantled, hasn't run for more than 20 consecutive days, and can be seen from another property.
In Dallas, junked vehicles fall under Section 18-20 of the City Code. Code Compliance handles cars on private property and the Dallas Police Department handles cars on the street; both are reported through Dallas311. Fort Worth takes reports at 817-392-1234, through the MyFW app or by email to 1234@fortworthtexas.gov.
State law requires at least 10 days' notice before a city removes a junked vehicle, and in Fort Worth a written hearing request has to reach the municipal court clerk by 5:00 p.m. on the tenth day after the notice. Maintaining the nuisance carries a fine of up to $200, and Fort Worth can file that complaint without notice first. Moving the car somewhere else in Fort Worth doesn't end a case that has already started. A car kept fully inside a garage and out of view is exempt. Selling it is the simplest fix: once a buyer tows it away, the problem is gone.

Hail-damaged cars and Texas titles
Texas decides whether a car needs a salvage title by comparing the cost of repairing damage with what the car was worth just before. But the Transportation Code's definition of damage leaves out sudden damage caused by hail, and TxDMV's Owner Retained Report form says a vehicle whose insurer paid a hail-repair claim is not a salvage motor vehicle. A car with only hail damage normally keeps its regular title, even if the repair estimate is more than the car is worth.
That makes hail cars straightforward to sell: you sign over the title you already have. If the car also has collision, flood or fire damage, or your insurer settled it as a total loss and took ownership, the title situation is different. Check which title you hold before you list it. Either way, describe the dents, broken glass and any other damage on the form so every buyer is pricing the same car.

Selling a junk car in Texas: the paperwork
Sign the title over
Give the buyer the title signed with the date of sale and the odometer reading.
Keep or deface your plates
Texas plates can come off with you. Move them to another vehicle of the same type, keep them, or deface the front of them with permanent ink so they can't be misused. The registration sticker does not transfer.
File a Vehicle Transfer Notification within 30 days
File it online with TxDMV. If you do it within 30 days of the sale you can't be held responsible for the buyer's tickets or tolls.
No title?
Texas generally requires one. Since January 1, 2026, a licensed used auto parts recycler can scrap a vehicle without a title only if it is at least 13 years old and hasn't been registered for 7 years. Otherwise, a certified copy of your title costs $2 by mail or $5.45 in person at a TxDMV Regional Service Center.

Selling a Junk Car in Dallas–Fort Worth
Call (877) 451-4417Will Dallas or Fort Worth tow my junk car without warning?
Not from private property without notice. Texas requires at least 10 days' written notice before a city removes a junked vehicle, and you can ask for a hearing within that window. Fort Worth can still file a fine of up to $200 without notice first, so selling before the deadline is the cleanest way out.
My car was totaled by hail. Can I still sell it?
Yes. Texas doesn't count hail as damage for salvage titles, so a car with only hail damage usually keeps its regular title and sells like any other car. If your insurer paid a total loss and took the car, it belongs to the insurer, not you.
Can I sell a junk car in DFW without a title?
Usually you need one. Texas only lets a licensed recycler scrap an untitled vehicle if it is at least 13 years old and hasn't been registered for 7 years. For anything else, a certified copy of your title costs $2 by mail or $5.45 in person from TxDMV. See selling without a title.

What do I do with my Texas plates and registration?
Take the plates off. You can move them to another vehicle of the same type, keep them, or deface them. Then file a Vehicle Transfer Notification with TxDMV within 30 days so you aren't held responsible for the buyer's tickets or tolls. See the full Texas guide.
