Collection & Purchase

Junk cars are purchased, towed, or received from insurance companies. The vehicle enters the recycling stream.

Parts Dismantling

HMS (Heavy Melting Steel)

The grade classification for scrap steel from vehicles. #1 HMS is clean, heavy steel. #2 HMS includes lighter gauge material. This grading directly affects the per-ton rate your junk car is worth.

Ferrous vs Non-Ferrous

Ferrous metals contain iron (steel, cast iron) and are magnetic. Non-ferrous metals (aluminum, copper, brass) are not. Both are recovered from junk cars but priced on different commodity markets.

Auto Shredder Residue (ASR)

The leftover material after a vehicle has been shredded and all metals have been recovered. Consists of plastics, rubber, foam, fabric, glass, and dirt. Also called 'fluff.' Historically landfilled, but increasingly processed for plastics recovery.

PGM (Platinum Group Metals)

Platinum, palladium, and rhodium — the precious metals inside catalytic converters. These are the most valuable materials per ounce in any vehicle, worth more than gold.

Shredder-Ready

A vehicle that has been de-polluted (fluids removed), stripped of reusable parts, and crushed into a bale — ready to feed into an industrial shredder.

Curb Weight

The total weight of a vehicle with all standard equipment and fluids but without passengers or cargo. This is the number used to calculate scrap value: curb weight ÷ 2,000 × per-ton rate.

Catalytic Converter

An emissions device in the exhaust system containing platinum, palladium, and rhodium. Often the single most valuable component in a junk car due to precious metal content.

Per-Ton Rate

The price paid per ton (2,000 lbs) of scrap steel in a given market. This is the base rate that determines what your junk car's metal content is worth.
